Groups are private rooms for talking things through with specific people — comparing notes on one seller, or working through a dispute without doing it in public.

This is the one part of the board that needs an account. A private room is meaningless if anybody can walk into it claiming to be anybody.

Posting reports and replies still needs no account at all.

Check the account age. Fresh accounts with glowing vouches are a pattern.
Reverse-image-search their photos.
Refuse "friends & family", gift cards and crypto-only. There is no recourse.
If they rush you, that is the scam.
